Digital film-making sent an entire generation of filmmakers packing, making way for new-gen filmmakers. They told new stories in almost a fraction of the cost and made profits. Ironically, once their initial films made money, the cost of production rose and they started giving flops. Thereby, the ratio of film industry world-over for hits and flops, tilted more towards the latter, with many established studios downing shutters.
YouTube consolidated its position, and filmmakers saw a new breed coming in, 'content creators'. Some becoming celebs, within no time. The gadgets became simple and easy to use and in 2015, a new style of filming made DOP's almost redundant, 'Self Tape'.
In an increasing busy world ruled by materialism and 'me first' - creative collaborations are hard to come by; 'Self Tape', is the best way to be a one man crew.
Major brands like Canon, Sony, Panasonic are launching and also developing gadgets that can be simple and easy to use. Recently, I went to buy few gadgets and was surprised to find Handycams that shoot 4K. All you need is a smart script and you can very well self-tape a feature film.
Guess, the saying everybody has a story to tell, will soon be modified to: everybody is a filmmaker!
