69 Opposites Attract l 101 l Assisting a Director, Guerrilla Film, DOGME 95 - Getting Your Film On! Part 1

A lot of aspiring filmmakers, cast & crew want to know, how to get their first film on?

My mantra has always been just do it, don't think "I will make a film, after assisting a director". Just make a film. Can assisting a director make you a director? I will give you a logical take, pick top grosser from last 20 years, you have 20 films, each film has say, 7 to 8 assistants. You have 150 names, how many became directors and if they did, how many made a second film, after their first film - probably 1 or 2.

I have always said, assisting is just a way to build network in the industry rather then learning anything! No one can teach filmmaking, because in films 2+2 can be 5, if you tell it convincingly.

Another way to get your film on is Guerrilla filmmaking, it involves negligible to zero budgets, skeleton crews, and using resources, available. Yukon Film Commission Manager, Mark Hill describes it as one, driven by passion with whatever means at hand. Scenes are shot quickly in real locations without people even knowing about filming and without obtaining filming permits. Film studios avoid guerrilla filmmaking because of the risk of being sued or fined by the authorities.
