69 Opposites Attract l 117 l Digital Era The Perils

Digital is a boon for filmmakers, no doubt; but has it hit creativity? In a way, yes, because now that everyone is a filmmaker, marketing really has taken over the making. Everyone wants to finish off a project fast, since movies require investment and any delays means cost over-run and interest-factor ticking.

Creative & financial aspect apart; digital has also made building teams & forging creative-synergies tougher, as any collaborating team-member that is dynamic, feels he or she can create their own filmed content; most of the people these days are one man army in terms of camera, editing, dubbing and post-production.

Reminds me of the time, when DOP was the second most important person on a set, the director's eye; directors actually used to wait for their regular DOP's to start their film. It was an era where there were no video-assists, so a director used to rely on DOP's discretion about the shot. Almost half of the under-30 directors, won't even know the film-lenses! Digital, thus, has undermined the importance of DOP to such an extent that today a director doesn't wait for their regular DOP's, if not available, there is always the next one around!

No wonder that many old-timers arguably quip; there are no filmmakers today, film-making ceased with the advent of digital!
